Do alpacas and llamas make good companions for each other?

I have 3 male alpacas. I was wondering... if someone had one alpaca and one llama, would that be a good pair since they are both pack animals or would they need to be with their own species?

  1. I'm not for sure, but I think I seen on discovery channel one time that llamas will protect ur alpaca herd

  2. First of all, alpacas are fiber animals, not pack animals.

But to answer your question, yes they do make appropriate companions for each other.  They both belong to the camelid family so they are related, but they are different species.

Some people do keep a gelding or female llama with their alpaca herd for protection against predators.

If you have an intact male llama with an intact male alpaca, they may fight occasionally just like intact males of the same species tend to do.  Geldings and/or females should get along just fine with each other.  Llamas & alpacas can interbreed & the offspring is called a "huarizo".  Reputable breeders never cross the two, however, because it does not improve on either species.

  3. Do you want to breed them or just put them in the same pasture. I wouldnt breed an alpaca and a llama even if they could. They sould be fine in the same pasture if you introduce them to eachother slowly.
