Do americans say "exscuse me" instead of "excuse me please"?

Question

I am in orlando and when an american says excuse me, I have noticed they don't say "please" aswell, whereas in england we usually always say it in order to be polite.

I think English people as a whole say 'Excuse me, please' in certain situations - like, if there's someone stood in front of me and they don't know I'm there, I might say 'Excuse me please' because over here 'excuse me' can be used in so many different ways:

For instance, if you're having an conversation, and someone says something that you didn't hear properly or are shocked by you might say "Excuse me?" to convey that.

In America I've noticed they say 'Excuse me' a lot, where in England we would be happy with "sorry." For instance, if you were to bump into someone, you would say 'sorry' and not 'Excuse me', whereas for the American's I've been around do it the opposite way round.

There is no need to say please after

excusing ones' self.

This can be viewed as very formal,and doing this is also like

asking for permission,when the person just wants to keep going.

It's an acknowledgment,for a blunder,over-site,or bumping into someone,or stepping on someone's shoes.

I could see a waiter doing this as he clears the table,or brings items,but nothing more.

It's a different culture. I wouldn't consider it's "less polite" just because people didn't grow up being taught to say it. And it's pretty much the same thing.

Come up here to Canada, we say "sorry" every minute!

Most Americans say nothing at all, at least most of the ones in my home town. They just bump into you rudely, then glare at you as though it's your fault.

I'm not saying that all Americans are rude - but around here etiquette isn't viewed as a necessity - and those of us who DO have decent manners are thought of as "stuck up".

On the other hand, Orlando is a huge tourist town, so you might be getting a good cross-representation of American citizens there.

In Ireland we just say excuse me, and that's it.  I think adding please is too much and sounds a little sub-serviant and makes you look like you are below the person you have bumped into or whatever has happened.

Never knew the proper thing to say was excuse me please. I thought saying excuse me was the polite thing to say. Be happy we are saying excuse me, because that is a lost phrase from many peoples vocabulary. They normally just expect you to move out of their way!

In Texas, we generally just say "excuse me".  "Excuse me please" sounds kind of strange to me.  Are you English?

Well I figure if I have to say excuse me then I have said it polite already instead of saying "MOVE" or just pushing my way through.

The please just isn't said after excuse me.  It sounds redundant.

Yes, it's normal and acceptable American usage to omit the "please." Either meaning of "excuse me"--"I need your attention" or "sorry I bumped you"--is fine without saying "please."
