My experience has varied from completely painless (sodium pentothal) to a strong burning sensation moving up my arm (could have been propofol). Even that wasn't really painful, and I didn't have to put up with it for long. It took maybe ten seconds to travel from my hand to my shoulder, then another ten when nothing much seemed to be happening, then the anesthetic must have reached my brain because everything started to go fuzzy. At that point I quickly lost interest in my arm and was out cold just a few seconds later.
Local anesthetic injections into the mouth aren't as bad if they anesthetize the surface first with a pad. Without that they can hurt a lot. If comfort were the only factor then I would go for a general anesthetic over one of these let alone eight.
