I'm just wondering since I'm thinking about either being an animal trainer or a vet when I'm older and I'm just wondering what one would be a better paying job. I would enjoy both jobs a lot :) Thx lots!!! :D

  1. The good breeders actually lose money because it costs a lot more to keep their dogs happy and in good health. Many breeders also show their dogs, and that costs a lot of money. Unfortunately there are also puppy mills, who do make money, but they are extremely cruel to their animals.

Animal trainers can make decent money if you become well known in the field. Many of them also write books on training. And of course Cesar Millan has made a lot of money on dog training or dog psychology as he likes to put it. The problem though is that there is a lot of competition in the field, so it is difficult to distinguish yourself.

Vets can make ok to really good money depending on your location and skill. If you really want to make good money, become a specialist. When my dog cracked his tooth, I went to see a dental specialist and she charged an arm and a leg :)

  2. If you want to work with animals I will assume you are an animal lover - in which case I would suggest you avoid breeding for ethical reasons.

    As for pay....

Vets generally get paid the most - although this does take the longest to get into (very long degree course) and is the most difficult (you need excellent grades etc).

Training - well that partly depends on what sort of training you mean. Dog training can be well paid - especially if you are qualified and registered with one of the well known groups eg the APDT

However, this can also depend on if you work for a company, or for yourself. Most animal jobs are poorly paid - simply because they are fun and so many people will do them for free!

Animal behaviourists can make a fair amount of money - but generally they also do a full time job as well. Most start off as either vets or trainers, then go into behaviour counselling on the side as the "specialist subject".

Breeding animals - if you do it properly - is more likely to COST you money than to make you any!

For example, you need lots of space, etc. Stud fees (for good quality animals) are expensive. Health testing is vital and also expensive. Then there are vet fees - possibly emergency ceasarians etc. Breeding in a caring responsible way (and taking proper care of all your animals) is incredibly expensive. The money you make back selling the young is unlikely to cover all your costs.

  3. Sometimes it matters what kind of dogs you breed.

  4. you said 3 job accupations. an animal breeder doesnt get good pay, because its more of a hobby.

an animal trainer gets a good pay, not that great, unless they work at petsmart or something, and train dogs there.

vets make the most money, obviously.

  5. this link is how to become a dog breeder

really if you want to make money the ONLY way is by breeding massive amounts of animals as cheap as you can.  In many cases this means the animals live in tiny cages and are not handled daily, if ever.  These "Breeders" who make $ do so by selling to pet stores.

NO "real animal lover" would EVER buy from a pet store.. they adopt from shelters or buy from REPUTABLE BREEDERS who breed only once a year and spend the rest of the time promoting their animal at shows, thus investing a lot of time and money in the animal - and NOT making a profit when selling the offspring.

animal trainer is better way to go or vet!

  6. Breeders make little to no money. The amount I make selling my rabbits does not compare to the cost of caring for them. It is a hobby, not a business.
