Do animals gather stuff like humans do?

Squirrels gather nuts and birds gather whatever they can find to make a suitable nest, but I think, instinctively they know when to stop gathering.

yes. some rats, or any other rodents, gather things that they see lying on the floor and take it and store them. ferrets like taking shiny things. no joke. they can take ur jewlery, keys, and anything thats shiny and it'll disapear and you will never see them again unless you catch them in the act. and dogs (at least mine) take things from the floor too. but so they can play with them.

Some types of Bower birds hoard every blue item they can find. They put it in their bower to try to impress the females.

When you live in the country, in areas where they live, you sometimes find that a lot of blue pegs and other blue items go missing.

Plenty of animals hoarde things. Usually food. Squirrels bury nuts, dogs bury bones, certain large cats will hide what they can't eat and come back to finish it later.

They also hoarde other things. Magpies, raccoons, and ferrets are obsessed with shiny objects. Some monkeys will steal just about anything they see. Blackbirds will rip the wool off a sheep's back to line their nest.

Hoarding is natural instinct.

I think magpies are a bit famous for hording shiny things, and have been known to nick jewelry and money if it's left out somewhere.

Also, animals collect nesting material to make nests, and some store food.
