Do anthropologists use maps extensively?

I was curious what ways maps could be used in anthropology.

Sure!! although nobody tell us, students, (at least not in my university) from the beginning to use them... it is really practical to know where the group you are studying is: Was it a state in the past? how did the map looked like before? how did it developed? which country is it today? Not only the political activity is important, but also the geography: Is it a desert? is it next to the river or an ocean???

Get a small pocket one will help lots!

Archaeologists use maps all the time:

- to show and interpret patterns of artifacts, ecofacts, etc, found on sites

- to illustrate and explore distributions of sites over a landscape in order to understand settlement patterns and human ecology

- to map resources and geographic features which may have interested past human populations.  

I could go on for ages.  If you're interested in archaeology, a geography degree might do you as much good as an anthropology degree.
