  1. ants NEVER sleep.

they're always awake all hours of the day and are out even in the dark...you usually just cant see them without looking closley with a flash light.

i learned this on a TV fact show about ants...and also in books & on the internet.

sorry. but the 1st answerer is wrong.

  2. The ants that I am familiar with seem to  have a quiet time diring night and if it is raining...never see them out during thos times...and in the winter...do they sleep then...you never see them out and about then....I guess they must have a 4 or 5 month sleeping period...maybe they hibernate, does that count

  3. They don't really sleep, however they do have periods of inactivity where they just stand still not doing anything. However, unlike sleep, they're ready to go anytime.

As for social orders, they don't have it, but rather have 'roles' that they have to fulfill. For example, the soldier ants are dedicated to fighting while the foragers are to look for food. The 'nurses' are obligated to feed the soldiers as their mandibles (jaws) are too large to help them eat.

As for who services the queens, its all from the chemicals the queen secretes. She is able to communicate whatever she wants from these chemicals and can even direct them to do stuff like getting them all back at once to defend her.

  4. Yes they do, matter of fact. It depends on the species. Some ants species sleep seven hours a day.

Groups of ants live in a social group called a colony. Some colonies are extremely large, with millions of individual ants. Ants spend most of their lives inside the colony.

There are many different kinds of workers in each colony. These different worker types are divided into castes. Castes differ from each other in the way they look and the jobs they do. For example, worker ants from different castes have different head sizes. They also have different kinds of mandibles that are adapted to perform a specific job that supports the colony. Some of the jobs include gathering food, defending the colony, and taking care of the eggs, larvae, and pupae.

  5. the ants have a very social order better than humans .they work days or night and about 2 to 3 weeks they die from exertion.to much work
