Question:

Do any African Americans flat iron your hair?

I get my hair relaxed, and someone is trying to talk me into only flat ironing it. They say it's healthier instead of all the chemicals. My hair is a tab bit wavy and she said it's soft too. In other words, my hair is super course or brittle. When she flat ironed it for me, she didn't put anything on my hair. I was surprised, b/c I thought I'd have to put some kind of oil on it or spray. She said my hair didn't need it, and I could probably flat iron my hair once a week after I wash it. Any suggestions from other African Americans and hair stylists? She also told me to use Redken shampoo. Does anyone use that? Which one will be best to strenghten some of the damage I did to my hair from the relaxers? Thanks

  1. I use redken

  2. Yeah my friend Lynette is african american and she flat irons it.

    It looks really good!

  3. I do and it is hard for me to keep it looking like something. I only do it so it can stop looking like fluff. As for the Redkin, never heard of it. I used thermasilk and dove and after a good drying and flat ironing low-medium heat it is like having a perm. It depends on the hair type cause some african americans can wash and dry their hair and have straight roots*mines frizz at the slight bit of moisture* however too much heat can damage it. But it is safer than a perm cause you can swim and not worry about your hair getting damaged.

  4. Ur friend is right....I go to my stylist and get my hair flatironed because she has natural hair like me ....perms are good in the case of some ppl who may have really kinky hair but I suggest you flatiron it or hotcomb it. Perms arent good for your hair at all, thats why I stopped getting them. Most black women and Hispanic women I know that get perms don't really need them...They either want their hair SUPER straight or want to get it permed to keep from flatironing it every other week or so. I have heard about Redken and many users say it works like a dream. Other great products...The Matrix line and Mizani...I also like some stuff by Garnier fructis. But um,yeah, before my friend flatirons my hair, she washes it,deep conditions it and sits me under the dryer for like 30 minutes. Then she flatirons it. It is a bit expensive at times, but my hair is healthier and thicker than it has been in a long time and its growing,so just follow my advice and listen to your instincts. also, try sally beauty supply store.they should have a website, too. They have some great products as well.

  5. I am black, with very thick, very curly, course hair and i flat iron it, but not often.

Well, it depends. relaxers can be very damaging to the hair if they are not properly done. Heat can be just as damaging if it is too hot or if you use heat too frequently.

you should ALWAYS use a heat protectant one your hair before using any heat (blow dryer, flat iron...) All hair needs it.

if you stop relaxing your hair, you will have to deal with two different textures ( I am in the middle of transitioning to natural, so I am experiencing this) and the hair is very weak where the two textures meet and can break easily if not taken care of properly

    I have not used Redken.

A series of good moisturizing deep condition treatments and protein treatments can help improve the condition of your hair. Also, if you have split ends, a good trim can help some.

    hope i covered everything
