Question:

Do any of you grow your own sprouts?

I heard something about growing sprouts indoors with no soil. All I heard is you can take some kind of seeds like bean seeds and grow them in jars in the house. They said you have to rinse them everyday and you can have a full jar in a week. I would really like to know if any of you do this. I love sprouts and I know they are super healthy.

Thanks.

  1. You can sprout most beans, grains and seeds. Raw foodists do it all the time, it's a staple of a raw food diet since they can't cook the beans or grains to eat them. The way to utilize them, therefore, is to sprout them and eat their sprouts.

Here are some instructions, including safety precautions and ways to prevent cross-contamination and other food-related issues:

Make sure you take good care of them and don't forget your sprout jar because it smells and gets gross very quickly. With proper care, and if you follow the instructions start to finish a few times in a row with different seeds, you'll get the hang of it.

  2. It's not too hard.  You use mason jars with the solid part of the lid missing and you s***w a piece of cloth on with the ring.  I use either Alfalfa or mung bean spouts, but I think you can use other types too.  Just make sure it is drained well after each rinsing.  Mung beans look like little green kidney beans.

  3. Sprouting is so easy!

go to www.sproutpeople.com and you can get some sprouting trays and seeds. (You could improvise your own, but if you use one of their 8x10 or half size sprouting trays there is less of a margin for error and the seeds going bad. The most important part of sprouting is rinsing properly and oxygen exchange. It can be hard for first timers to do this with mason jars, ect...)

Pretty much, soak your seeds for 12 hours, rinse and drain very well, and then put them in whatever container you are using. Let them sit in the darkness until they have long tails and are fully sprouted. You will want to rinse them every 8-12 hours during this time. Once the tails are to your satisfaction, let light get at them to green them up.

Note: Some things can't be sprouted well-- mostly beans and nuts, that will get a nub but then start going bad if not used. Sproutpeople has awesome instructions that come with their stuff (you can prob even find it all on their site) and they tell all about what can and can not be sprouted.

Good luck with it! Making your own sprouts is awesome, fun, and gives you even better nutrients than the store bought kind! Remember to use filtered water!
