I live in an area where the ecnomy is based on car manufacturing plants and car related factories. I see so many people saying they won't buy an American car because they are not as good or as cool. I see so many people losing jobs and families lives being ruined because the America car industry is crumbling. What can we do to encourage more people to buy American?

  1. no i don't american cars are not that good

  2. sorry Jedy but american cars suck.

  3. Nope, I own an American car, but I buy based on who has the best product. Plus many American cars are not made in the US and many "import" cars are made in the US. For example, both the Camry and Accord are made in the US. So you're still supporting the local economy. If you buy a Chevy HHR or something(which is made in Mexico if I'm not mistaken) then all you're doing is making some guy who owns GM stock richer.

A big reason the domestic car industry is crumbling is because of the power the unions have over the companies. They get paid very well(over $50/hr in many instances) and get an amazing healthcare package. The healthcare alone adds $1000 to the price of American cars. It makes it near impossible for them to compete against cheaper Japanese cars. So the only way they can sell cars is if they sell it at a loss which means the company keeps loosing money. When it keeps losing money then jobs go.

[Edit: Contrary to the two people above me there are quite a few good American cars. The Malibu, Taurus, Mustang, Aura, Sky/Solstice, G8, 300, and Charger are all good cars.]

  4. american cars arnt that great both my cars are japaneese (lexus and acura) i will soon be getting an american car but it will be a 3rd car to use on the weekends (jeep wrangler). american cars actually are one of the top 3 i believe it is toyota, honda, and then ford and ford is american so dont feel bad they still do well.

  5. well i mean if the american car is going down you can help it but to buy the best product so i dont think just because we are americans we have to buy necessarily an american car i used to have a pontiac gto and now i drive a scion tc its a downgrade but i enjoy this car much better because its not as expensive it doesnt break down as much so obviously ill go with the better product i aint racist or nothing i just go for the winning team and whats best for me

  6. It's not that simple anymore - many American cars are now made in other countries - the Ford Taurus has been built in Mexico for quite some time.  And Honda and Toyota have factories and are building cars here in the U.S. - we now have a global economy.  If you look at the "sticker" on a car it will tell you exactly how much of a car is built in the U.S or how much is foreign - that might be a good way to choose if this is an important decision to you.  My most important decision in my next vehicle will be how "green" it is and what the MPG is - with gas prices climbing I must get the most I can out of each gallon!

  7. We need to encourage the American car makers to keep up with what the Japanese are producing. Ford is slowly catching up in quality, but they still have a ways to go in efficiency.

People would love to buy only American cars, but not if it ends up costing them more in the long run.

Japanese cars have proven to be WAY more fuel efficient, and last twice as long as 9 out of 10 American cars. Half of them have better safety ratings too. Right now people are relying on those facts much more with the bad economy to save money.

I own an American car right now, only because I got a great deal on it. If I would've had more money at the time, I probably would have bought a Honda or Toyota strictly because of reliability.

Yes, I feel bad about that, but what can I do? I need to save money to.

  8. nope -today's cars are made from parts found all over the world.  an "American" car might be a Toyota constructed in the US or a GM vehicle with Japanese parts.
