  1. A kid should stop when they feel comfortable, and a parent should never tell a child to stop.  Goodness, it's showing affection and you should never discourage them from doing that.

  2. LOL, not a chance!  daughter is almost 17 and quit around the 2nd grade, son is 13 and quit around 10.  they're great kids but they're not going to be seen holding hands with their parents.

  3. Stefano stopped holding my hand at age 5.

    Aaron stopped at age 4.5.

    Bella stopped at age 6.

Aidan, who recently turned 4, holds my hand most of the time.

Cami, who recently turned 4, holds my hand almost always.

Gabi, Emmi, and Nate are only 3 months, so yeah...

Basically, I think that before age 7 most children should and do stop holding your hand in public. Sure they can sometimes, but not like always. Basically, they shouldn't need to. I also think girls hold your hand longer than boys.

  4. My son is currently 10 and he stopped around the age of 6 or 7. Matter of fact, if we are walking, even just in a park and I ask to hold his hand (not so much in a guiding way, but just for that closeness) he will laugh at me and say "Mom, come on".

My daughter is almost 5 and she still holds my hand, but it is now starting to decrease.

The truth is as children age they do start to focus on who they are. They individualize themselves. One child may view holding his or her parents hand as a sign that he is still a "younger child" and another may enjoy that closeness with the parent. It is very healthy for a child to do this. You want a child who is able to view themselves as an individual and accept more maturity as they are getting older. I am not going to say when a child "should" reach the point they are no longer comfortable with holding their parents hands. That is based upon the individual child, but when it does come I think the parents should embrace it and take it as a sign their child is maturing.

  5. My son is 11 and I stop holding his hand at the age of 7. A child needs to feel independent at some point, you can't baby them their whole life.

  6. i dont think it really matters what age they do it or when they should stop.  I probably stopped when I was 10-11, but occasionally I would grab and hand or lock arms or something.  just depends.

  7. Sure I'll hold there hands as long as they think its appropriate.  Its my child and who cares what ANYONE else thinks about that bond.  When my child is done holding my hand that's the right time for me.

  8. I agree 100% with The Oracle, very well put!

I have a 22 yr old sister and my mom died when she was 11 and she still likes to hold my hand (or our other sisters) and we probably look like a couple LOL But I do not care she is my little sister and I will hold her hand at any age if that is what she wants, and the same for my own kids, but they are still young enough they hold my hand a lot of the time.

  9. oh god! my 12 yr old my never hold my hand!

I think 11 is too old

  10. I'm twenty. I hold my mum and dad's hand all the time. My sister's seventeen. She does too. My other 14 year old brother and sister do too.

It's only holding hands for goodness sake. Is there some unwritten rule you're not allowed to touch/show affection past a certain age?

Obviously you as a parent shouldn't force your kid to hold your hand past about eight, but if your kid wants to, why not?

  11. i stopped around five or six i dont know what to tell you id be embarrased if some one saw me holding my moms hannd now

  12. im 17 and i link arms or hold hands with my mum because shes my best friend as well as my mum.
