  1. very rare in tbreds, but happens all the time in harness racing

  2. I am quite sure this would be against the rules!  I am certainly no expert - but this would seem to be a MAJOR conflict of interest!  They are not allowed to bet...I would think owning would be even more unlikely!

    Here are a couple of statements I found

    All jockeys must be licensed and usually are not able to have an interest in a bet on a race.

    Well, maybe I am wrong...here is the Australian rule regarding this

    AAR.79(1) A jockey licenced by NARA may own or part own a horse which is in training or entered for a race only if;

    the jockey is not an apprentice jockey; and

    the horse is owned by or leased to;

    the jockey only; or

    the jockey and the jockey's spouse and no other person; or

    the jockey is the/or a lessor but not the/or a lessee of that horse.

    To say this SHOCKS me is an understatement!

    Here is the rule I found regarding "Financial Interest"

    3769-7-15 Restriction on financial interest.

    No jockey who has any financial interest in any race horse in training at a meeting shall ride any other horse at the same meeting.

    Here is what I found about betting

    3769-7-18 Wager restriction.

    No jockeys shall wager on any horse other than their own mount in any race in which they ride or permit anyone so to wager for them. For any violation of this rule, the jockey shall be fined and suspended and referred to the racing commission.

  3. no its manyly the really rich old ******* get the top jockeys to ride their horses highly unlikle but possible

  4. nope mostly owned by old rich people sum own their own tho

  5. It is legal for a owner to act as his own jockey, but he or she must be liscensed as both an Owner and a Jockey.

    I believe there are a couple who do it at small tracks....Thisledown seems to come to mind.  They usually have the horses listed as being owned by a Farm, that they in turn own.....

    J.J McCafferty was an Owner, trainer and Jockey.  So it is possible, but does not happen very often.

  6. nope the top racers sell for millions so the rich people buy them, get people to excercise them at 4 am in the morning and then get the top jockeys to ride them in the races.

  7. i don't think they are allowed to be owners..

  8. It does happen, mostly in National Hunt (jump racing), particularly the Hunter Chase races.

    There is one man in particular, a doctor, that used to ride but he certainly trains and often owns his horses.

    Carl Llewellyn was a top-class NH jockey and is now semi-retired.  He is a trainer in his own right but still occasionally rides some of the horses he trains in races.

    A lot of jockeys breed racehorses as they often get given a breeding right to a stallion as a thank you for riding him.
