Question:

Do any substantial USA cities NOT use a gridded street pattern?

On a recent trip to the USA, a friend of mine said she was struck by how all American cities and most towns that she saw were built around a gridded square, with few curves in the road. I understand why this is, but I am curious.

Are there any sizeable towns or cities (that a foreigner might have heard of, preferably!) that exhibit a more 'organic' growth pattern, as per a western European city?

Thanks!

  1. Houston Texas or Denver Colorado is awful no grid whats so ever! You take a wrong turn and you are in a diffrent city!! Even when I lived there I still got lost all the time.

  2. Boston has old streets.  Lovely place to visit by the way.

  3. New Orleans doesn't  , and curved layout in places . nice city . don't know it well but got that impression . typical french architecture .
