  1. I have a 16 month old neice and she loves animals!=]]]

    maybe different animals on it would hold their attention...

    Or maybe something bright and colorful...babies and toddlers love colorful stuff!

  2. I'm not sure what a circle time board is, but just keep it short.  Developmentally they can only sit for a short amount of time.  I would sing songs and do dances, read books, that sort of thing.  I would also allow them to leave after a few minutes, because developmentally that's where they are.

  3. Try doing show and tell, you wouldn't want to do it everyday, keep it as something special and hopefully they will all want to have a go.  It;s where they bring something of their own in from home and they can show it and tell everyone all about it.  If they can't bring in something from home encourage them to show something from the setting.

  4. When I work with this age group I bring out  special blanket for us all to sit on.  I agree that developmentally, not all children at this age are ready or able to stay put during circle time, so I do not insist on this.  Usually though, just me spreading out the blanket, and sitting down on it with them draws them in for a while at least.

    They love little songs and finger plays, so we do Itsy, Bitsy Spider, Five Little Monkeys, Five Little Ducks, Wishy Washy Washer Woman, etc.  When I can I give every child a little something to hold.  For example, during Itsy Bitsy Spider, I have laminated spiders dangling from a black string and every child gets one while we sing.  They dangle and dance it around.  For 5 little ducks they get little ducks on popsicle sticks.

    At this age, you should not expect them to sing along with you all that much.  Some will, some won't.  But they still love it.  Also, they love repetition, so be prepared to sing the same songs and finger plays over and over and over again.

  5. My sons daycare uses a giant calendar with the days of the week and month. The teacher will go over the specifics for that day. Also she uses a chart to chart what's the weather outside.

    An alphabet chart (lower & upper case)

    Numbers 1-10

    Shapes

    I would visit my local school supply store for tools...Good Luck!

  6. Anything that is visual, puppets, flannel pieces (to go on the board. A big way to catch their attention is the way you talk to them. Change your voice once in a while.

    Remember they are toddlers. So be paitient. Don't get upset with them if they don't listen. With a new ability to move, they are now focusing on their immediate surroundings.  Their language skills are developing very quickly and their personalities are beginning to show through their actions. At this age, they can become easily frustrated and express their frustrations physically, rather than verbally. For this exact reason, additional attention on increased stimulation. Try to play music. They love to dance. Be silly. Kids love that.

    Congratulations on becoming a new teacher(:

  7. In preschool, I remember having an great time when we sang songs. My teacher would take out a piece of cardboard with names (with pictures too) of songs velcroed to it. And she would pick a popsicle stick with someones name on it and if it was your name you would get the cardboard and get to choose the song for circle time that day! As a little kid, I loved it. It was always really exciting when you got to be the one chosen to pick the song! The velcro on the cardboard was used so you could take the song off the cardboard and put it on the circle time board as todays song, for everyone to see. As a little kid it was exciting. Also on the circle time board we had the weather that we all discussed the weather that day and put a cloudy sign up or sunny or rainy, etc. There was also the calander with peoples birthdays....and much more!

    Be creative! Hope this helps! Good Luck!!!!

  8. A formal circle time is not appropriate for toddlers. A few times during the day plunk your self down on the floor and invite the children to join you for a story or some music time but keep it very informal. Include materials they can interact with-instruments during music time, books and stuffed animals during story time. Start the day with a good morning song that involves movement. In any case, don't require the children to join the group or stay once they are there.
