  1. a college that's also near a zoo so you can work/volunteer there. Get your foot in the door!


  2. It depends on your specialty within the field. For a "skin-in" zoologist (physiology, genetics, anatomy etc.), you can't beat Harvard, if you can afford it. For "skin-out" zoology (ecology, taxonomy etc.), you might consider Cornell, Michigan, USC ....

    I suggest that you start reading the journals in your field. When you find articles of interest, note what school the author is affiliated with (if any). Short-list those schools. Write to the author, perhaps asking for a reprint of the article. If you get no response, kick the school off your short list. If you get more than the bare shipment of that reprint (for example, other articles in the same field), move that school up on the list.
