  1. My little sister did it until she was ten. We went to the orthodontist and paid hundreds for an appliance to stop her sucking her thumb. It didn't work. She then bought a pair of pink stick-on nails from Walmart, applied then, and thus made a fashion statement and never sucked her thumd again.

  2. Thumb sucking is a source of comfort for you daughter.  Obviously she feels stressed at school, I suggest you find out WHY she feels stressed rather than trying to remove a source of comfort from her.  There is nothing wrong with thumb sucking, it's not hurting you other than the fact that you think it is a reflection on you and people will think you are a bad parent because you child does it.  Guess what?  It's not always about YOU.

  3. This is why I always tell mothers NEVER to let their babies suck their thumb. They eschew soothers thinking that thumbs are ok, what a mistake. You can chuck a soother away, you cannot cut off a thumb. All I can suggest is putting some disgusting tasting substance on her thumb, but at 8yrs she is perfectly able to scrub it off. Tell her her teeth and jaw will end up mis-shapen and will look very unattractive (true) that the thumb she sucks will look odd in comparison to the other one, (true) that it makes her look as if she has learning difficulties (true) that it is a "secret" activity that she feels she must hide from others to avoid ridicule (true). Then give all other mothers the benefit of your wisdom when you see them smile encouragingly at their infant thumb suckers. Best advice? Ignore it, at this age your daughter will only stop when she chooses to. Do not make it a battle zone between you, kids love that. Good luck. x

  4. When she's going to bed, have her put thick mittens on. At school and home, give her something to keep her hands or mouth occupied- whether it's a stress ball, lollipop, knitting or whatever. Thumb sucking is a stress reliever and boredom killer- you have to replace it with another stress relieving behavior or it will be hard to stop or she might pick up a worse habit.

  5. Put hot sauce on it. No really, everytime she is caught sucking it, she owes you a quarter.

  6. She will stop when she doesn't need comforting anymore. The more you bug her about it, the harder it will be for her to stop.

  7. You can put "no nail biting" solution on her hands ( I'm not sure what its called). But if you put it on her thumbs, you have to put it in her fingers as well, because she may resort to sucking her fingers instead. It will give her a bitter taste in her mouth, but it truly helps.

I totally agree with you, sucking her thumb can damage her teeth. It can give her a overbite, because her teeth will continue to shift to compensate for the thumb being there. Good Luck!!!

  8. help her put lotion on her hands and fingers so when she tries to suck it gets a bitter taste.
