  1. Great idea retards! Maybe then they can go to Iraq and abuse their priviledge by shooting at an innocent civilian and paint their nasty graffiti on the wall. After all, THEY WERE IN PRISON for being a serial killer, drug abuser, rapists. But of course none of that really matter to you because you don't really give a d**n about the consquences.

And those who said yes are either suffering from retardation or they were just born with a low mentality and judgement. Thanks god people like you aren't running the country,. But then again, no one would nominate people like you anyway.

How about this, do you think prisoners should go to the Police Academy and become an Officer?

Let's see how you like that from your own point of view as a civilian.

  2. I disagree. They used to actually do that. But the Army didn't like it and it was forbidden.

  3. excerpts from link:

The United States has the highest reported incarceration rate in the world.  While the United States currently incarcerates 750 inmates per 100,000 persons, the world average rate is 166 per 100,000 persons.  Russia, the country with the second highest incarceration rate, imprisons 624 per 100,000 persons.  Compared to its democratic, advanced market economy counterparts, the United States has more people in prison by several orders of magnitude.  ALTHOUGH CRIMES RATES HAVE DECREASED SINCE 1990<emphasis mine>, the rate of imprisonment has continued to increase....

The prison system has a disproportionate impact on minority communities. African Americans, who make-up 12.4 percent of the population, represent more than half of all prison inmates, compared to one-third twenty years ago. Although African Americans constitute 14 percent of regular drug users, they are 37 percent of those arrested for drug offenses, and 56 percent of persons in state prisons for drug crimes. African Americans serve nearly as much time in federal prisons for drug offenses as whites do for violent crimes.

Prisons are housing many of the nation’s mentally ill. Prisons are absorbing the cost of housing the nation’s mentally ill. The number of mentally ill in prison is nearly five times the number in inpatient mental hospitals. Large numbers of mentally ill inmates, as well as inmates with HIV, tuberculosis, and hepatitis also raise serious questions regarding the costs and distribution of health care resources.

A few facts to dissuade any notions of using prisoners to perform military duties....

another little blurb from the same link.....

Changes in drug policy have had the single greatest impact on criminal justice policy.  The Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986 created mandatory minimum sentences for possession of specific amounts of cocaine.

    This is what America wants....

mentally ill crack addicts behind bars....

and this is what they got

now they gotta pay for it

  4. You're talking about the dirty dozen. A great movie and I'm looking forward to Inglorious b******s.

The soldiers fighting there have to follow a strict code to rules of engagement. With the amount of pressure and scrutiny that the military is under to follow the rules, and the amount of mistakes already made, makes the situation in Iraq very fragile. The last thing Iraq needs right now is a group of convicts (that can't follow the basic rules of society) running around Iraq with machine guns.

  5. Prisoners? Violent thugs who act out their tendencies illegally.

Military men? Violent thugs who act out their tendencies under legal justification.

I think they'd all get on pretty well.

  6. This question, in one form or another, pops up on YA from time to time. Prisoners are in the fix they are in because they couldn't follow the laws and rules of society in the first place. That indicates they would be poor candidates to succeed in the armed forces where personal discipline and adherence to the rules is paramount. I'm sure you would not feel comfortable having a prisoner with you and your co-worker in the work place. So, to me, it is wrong to try and inflict that sort of work place atmosphere on the fine men and women who serve in our armed forces.

  7. As ideas go, that's not one of the better ones.

  8. I thought they already did that.

Young deliquents with minor non-violent crimes, like stealing cars, are offered the choice between enlisting or going to prison.

  9. People are in jail because they can not follow the rules of society. How do you think they will do when they have to follow the rules and regulations in the military.

This is the worst idea ever.

  10. I think so

  11. No...prisoners are criminals and have no respect for the laws.

They can't obey laws, what makes you think they will obey orders by their commander?

I've got a better idea...let's turn Antartica into a prison colony. No fences, no guards, no cells. Just put them on a ship, sail down there, and as they get off the ship, give them a coat and tell them they are on their own. We just have a naval force patrol the coast. It's not like there is any resources for them to get off the continent anyway. They can s***w penguins for all I care.

EDIT: Betty, no...they do not offer people a choice between jail/prison or the military. They used to do that way back in the day, but not anymore. It is an all volunteer military now and if you have a felony on your record, you can't join without getting a waiver. The waiver is also very hard to get.

  12. There is already a program like that - offenders of certain laws are offered the chance to join the military rather than go to prison.

There is also a long history of using convicts as soldiers.

  13. yes, yes, yes. Fantastic idea!
