Do archaeologists ever require volunteers to help them on site?

  2. Yes, check to see if there is an archeological society in your area. If so, join it.

  3. yes, there are many opportunities to assist with a site.  I would suggest that you contact a local University in the U.K that you would be interested in working with.  If they aren't doing anything in the area they might be able to point you in the right direction or at least give you a new contact.  I will be honest with you though at the end of each day you will know that you have worked.  It's not an easy day's worth of work but it is very rewarding, especially if you end up finding something.  If your site ends up being a bust then you'll feel a bit let down but that's just part of the job.  Most of the time you will find something and be part of something historical.  If the opportunity pops up for ya please do yourself a favor and jump on it.
