Question:

Do artificial sweeteners cause gas?

I've heard that one of the artificial sweeteners out there (sorbitol) causes gas because of the body's inability to digest it or something. Is there any others that do it as well?

  1. I've actually heard that sorbital has a laxative effect if you eat too much.

  2. i think they do cause gas

  3. Yes, probably!!

I ate this sugar free white chocolate bar that was sweetened with either mannitol or maltitol (artificial sweetners) and I ate the whole bar (I guess a serving was half bar) and I got the worst diarreah from it. On the back of the wrapper it said too much might cause a laxative effect.  I didn't know I got it from the bar at first but it happened again. That happened when I was a little kid.

Artificial sweeteners are very unhealthy and have been shown to cause cancer in rats. Check out this article: http://www.truthaboutabs.com/artificial-...

  4. Most, if not all, artificial sweeteners will cause gas because of the reason you stated and because the body does not recognize them as natural food products.
