Do athletic swimmers (such as those in the olympics) develop more water in their muscles? I am skeptical?

  1. no, why would they, it's not like their muscles absorb the water or anything. we work out just like anyone else, we just happen to be in an aquatic area.

  3. No, just like how you don't inflate to mammoth proportions when caught in a rainstorm, water doesn't cross into the muscles through the skin.

    Actually, depending on the level of chemicals in the water, water might leave the muscles if it were possible.

    Osmosis works to achieve equilibrium on both sides of a semi-permeable membrane.  So if there's a stronger concentration of salts or other dissolveable solids on one side, the water will move from the lower concentration side to try and diffuse the concentration and achieve equilibrium.

    So a pool with lots of chemicals, if water could pass through the skin, which it doesn't, would draw water from the body and muscles.

    In any case, water doesn't pass that way, so my speculation is pretty pointless.
