Question:

Do babies honestly have to choke to learn how to chew and swallow?

My daughter is 8 months and has two teeth. She likes to chew on watermelon and other little things but I never let her keep it in her mouth because I'm so scared of her choking. My mother-in-law says she is going to choke no matter what, and if that's the case, I NEVER want her to start on REAL food...

Any suggestions?

  1. Most babies will gag when they first try solid food - and that is fine, and to be expected.

Your MIL is confusing gagging with choking - two very different things.

  2. No not all babies choke and gag or need to.  My son had solids "late", we introduced them around 6 months but he wasn't interested so we let it go (it's only practice at that age anyway).  When he was 9 or 10 months he just got little bites of what we were eating (fruits, veg, meat only of course) and did fine with it.  My daughter on the other hand was on 100% smooth puree until 10 months before she could eat thicker/lumpier foods or finger foods.  I made her baby food so it was easy enough to "customise" for her needs at least.  But every baby is different, I wouldn't be too worried.

  3. I wouldn't say that the baby would choke but I would say gag because they are not used to swallowing whole food.  They are used to liquid.

  4. Well, there is a difference between gagging and choking. They might gag at times, but as long as they don't have a large or long piece of something in their mouth, it should be okay. I know it sounds scary, but vomiting can be a good thing.. to push the food back out. Try to trust your baby. I know it's scary, but it's gotta happen some time. ;)

  5. at 8 months she is old enough, she will gum the food and swallow.  She may gag but she will not choke.  Let her enjoy melon, avocado, steamed veggies, banana, pear, pasta, chesse, and toast.  (just to name a few things).  She needs to start experimenting with real food now, let her have fun and try not to worry so much.
