  2. Wouldn't that be a bit of a waste of time and energy to script conversations that no-one is listening to?

  3. Nope, all the conversations are fake. They are not scripted. They call those people extras and they are usually asked to make random conversations that are not loud and not to make large movements. So that they don't distract the viewers.

  4. Haha! Fake. I usually don't even know the people I'm pretending to talk to. It looks real doesn't it? You have to stay quiet on the set so the mics don't pic you up. Painfully quiet. So quiet its annoying.

  6. Answer # 1 Gives you what is the most common situation on stage.

What I find most often, especially with those familiar with the script/context of the piece, is that they may chatter as if talking about what action is taking place.

Certainly as answer # 1 states, they can be chatting about anything, as long as it isn't at all distracting to the cast, or overheard.

It is ACTING after all, and has a very specific purpose, SO one might assume that during an action scene, observed by background cast, THEY would also be somewhat interactive, with regard to what main action is taking place. That could manifest in speaking, gesturing, facial expressions, etc.
