Question:

Do banks even offer certificates of deposit (CDs) anymore?

I happened to visit two banks today and saw no ads or info pamphlets on CDs. Is it because the interest rate on them is so low that they aren't an attractive investment anymore?

Just curious.

  1. they are still here in NJ, but not at a very good rate

  2. OK, I just clicked over to my credit union Web site. The first ad I saw there is for "great new CD specials" (15-month, 9-month, and 5-month CDs with APY up to 4.00 percent).

So my answer is a definite "Yes, they do."

(Unless you're one of those people who considers a credit union as something different from a bank, in which case my answer is a definite "I don't know.")

  3. Lots of banks offer CD's. Best place to research current interest rates (whether it be CD's, money market, mortgages, car loans, etc.), as WELL as any particular bank's soundness (danger of failing, as CA's Indymac did last week) is bankrate.com.

Don't keep more than $100,000 in any one bank.
