I want to know if anyone has experience with bicycle tube protectors and how well they work. From waht I've researched, there are brands like Slime, Mr Tuffy and Earth Guard that manufacture tube protectors, but i couldn't find any reviews made by real live users. I plan on using it on a mountain bike. Thanks for the help.

  1. I have never used them .. although they have been around for years. The big disadvantage is they tend to be heavy, and I always try to keep rotating weight to a minimum.

In my experience properly inflated and mounted tires in good condition are not particulalry prone to flats.  Latex-Butyl tubes (such as Air-B) are more resistant to puctures than normal butyl rubber. For trail riding tires with kevlar belts (not to be confused with kevlar beads on folding tires) are about as far as I'd go.

The only valid use I have read about for tire protectors are to counter puncture by thorns prevelant in some parts of the world. But since they are not an issue in northeastern North America where I live I have never had to worry.

On a philosophical basis I would avoid add ons (i.e. not an integral part of the tire) on the theory it may shift in use ... but that's just me.

The discussion at the link may be useful.

  2. Yes, MTBng was always getting pesky hard to find thorn punctures, flats.  Put in Slime strips and muchmobetta!

Have coupla buds using slime tubes instead and happy w'm.

I don't know wonder, ask, about the weight?
