Do black cats really bring bad luck or is it an urban legend?

I was walking around my neighborhood talking to my friend on the phone and smoking a cigaratte. When all the sudden a black cat jump out of nowhere and just follows me around. It kind of scared me when it jumped out of nowhere butt I didn't trip in fact it came to me and was very freindly so I petted it and held it, and all it probably wanted is some company. I really don't believe that black cats bring bad luck, I know a friend that came accross black cats and walks under ladder's and he does not have bad luck. That cat followed me all the way to my house. But yet again that night I saw a shooting star and made a wish. I think that its a strait up urban myth that black cats bring bad luck if anything I think its good luck. What do you'll think urban legend or BS?

About eight years ago I was going through a really hard time in my life.  I was driving down a dirt road slowly and crying so hard I had to almost stop.  I raised my hand and said "please God just give me a sign!  I need a sign!"  As soon as those words came out of my mouth a black cat came walking slowly out of the woods. It had green eyes and it walked right in front of my car.  I had to come to a complete stop to let it cross my path.  It was staring at me the whole time.  I said Thats my sign!!!  I was shocked but I KNEW it meant something.  Ever since that day EVERY time I see a black cat within the two days following something really bad happens.  It is not in my imagination, it's not a joke and no coincedience.  It scares me and ever since that day my life has taken a downward spiral.  I am starting to belive that i am cursed.  I was in my garage three days ago in the middle of the night and a black cat from out of nowhere came walking to the edge of my garage.  I was shaken with fear and brought to my knees in prayer.  But I am in another bad situation.  If any one can help me I would appreciate any feed back.
