  1. Depends on the person.  Some prefer black, some prefer African-American; others prefer brown, and some older people prefer colored.

Personally, I refuse to call them African-American unless they started life on the continent of Africa and have now moved to the Americas.  We don't call someone whose ancestors came from Japan or China 15 generations ago Asian-American: they're just American.  So is almost everyone else (perhaps 90%).

  2. black

  3. Black

  4. I'm a black guy. I'd rather be called "Black" or "Black American" since I've never been to Africa, don't know any African languages, not African at all in the slightest.

Somewhere down the line one of my great grandmothers was white/European, and grand father Native American. If one calls me African American, then I should also be called Native American, or European American, but that doesn't make clear sense, so, just call me Black.

  5. I think people sound too 'safe' and like they're TRYING not to offend people when they say "African American".

    I say "black".

I'd rather be called "white" than "Caucasian" - so....

Of course there are those who get offended when people say "black", so whatever.

General rule - say whatever you want.
