  1. yes they drop leaves in winter. if you want something that stays all green all winter in chicago, you need a evergreen shrub something like a yew, juniper, arborvitae, cypress or boxwood.

  2. Yes, they drop their leaves and would not be a good choice. You would want to look at evergreen shrubs....would they survive a cold Chicago winter on a rooftop?  It seems like the roots  would freeze pretty hard up there....Not a city girl, so I wonder if this is possible in Chicago!!!???

  3. Yes,  blueberries drop their leaves in the fall.  If you want something for a hedge try some evergreens - anything but junipers- to me they smell like cat pee when they are wet, and they do not grow very high.

  4. NOT A good idea!  Blueberry's need deep rich soil with lots of mulch and good water for a cool root system.

Also they do loose their leaves in winter.

I gotta say, I don't know too many trees or shrubs that would stand up to that kind of winter weather in above ground pots.

Their roots would freeze solid in containers.

You really need containers with double walls and much bigger than the root ball to protect any plant in a Chicago winter!!!

  5. They do drop leaves and the fall color display is amazing.  Oranges, rusts, and yellows... it's a very nice fall display.  Do you really spend time on your roof top during the winter?  Do you need the evergreen privacy?  You will have leaves March to September!

Blueberries do well in pots!  Big pots!  Like, 1 plant per whiskey barrel!
