Question:

Do boxing gloves have strings?

I have this pair of boxing gloves that I bought for autographing purposes and there seems to be a string that goes from the tip of the thumb to the tops of the fingers, but it's cut off? This seems odd. Should it be there? Does anyone know the reasoning for this?

  1. I think that they have laces on the wrist part, but I don't know about any strings.

  2. yes some do

  3. Competition gloves have laced wrists, which get tied and then get taped over (you'll often see fight officials/refs sign the tape job to know the gloves weren't "loaded" when being put on).   But you're talking about the little string that connects the end of the thumb to the main mitten.  This is meant to keep the thumb inside, and was designed for ammateurs/ and some olympic fighting to prevent "thumbing" or poking an opponent in the eye.  It is not a professional fighting feature, since once broken, it can become an item that can actually scratch or cut an opponents skin.

  4. If they're for autographing purposes then buy a pair of quality boxing gloves like Cleto Reyes, Everlast, Grant, or even Winning gloves.. and just throw away those cheap deformed gloves.

  5. if its for autographing purposes than maybe it is made differently since they aren't made to be used.

there are boxing gloves that have laces. those are the kind that are used by professional boxers.

if you want to look at what various gloves look like and compare them then check out ringside.com and everlast.com

  6. I think they do have strings on. When you put them on you kind of undo the strings a bit then put your hands in then pull them.
