Question:

Do british light bulbs fit american lamps?

Help? I ordered my daughter a spongebob lamp from america, it came today but im not sure if i can use a british light bulb in itor not, its says use type A light bulb max of 40 wats, but what is a type A light bulb? Can any one help me?

  1. Light bulbs are pretty much international, only the names are different.

    Look at the light fitting. If it has a rim with two sideways L shape cutouts, it is a BAYONET socket. If it is only as wide as your finger, it is a SMALL BAYONET.

    If the fitting has s***w threads, it is an EdisonScrew fitting. These also come in normal and small.

    If you are in doubt,take the lamp with you to the shop. Make sure the bulb you get is not so big that it touches and overheats any cover over it.


  2. It will be a s***w fitting but these are widely available i.e. supermarkets sell them.  I don't know about the wiring though, they work on lower voltages, will the wire be heavy enough?  Need to ask an expert.
