Question:

Do brown, purple, or red leaves have chlorophyll?

The chlorophyll in green leaves is vital for photosynthesis, allowing plants to obtain energy from light.

However, a variety of Japanese maples, along with other plants, do not have green leaves. Leaves of these plants can be brown, deep purple, or various shades of red and orange.

Do the leaves of these types of Japanese maples also contain chlorophyll? If not, how do they photosynthesize sunlight?

  1. Because they like pie

  2. It depends if it's autumn or not. If it is autumn the trees will turn other colors and wait for the winter to hibernate and will not absorb sunlight thus becoming brown, purple or red leaves.
When it's not autumn, the some leaves still have chlorophyll, others have other pigments to make food.
It's quite confusing even for a old scientist like me.
