Question:

Do budiges need a nest to sleep in?

I just got a budgie, his wings came clipped so he has a hard time getting to the perches, it took him a while but he made it.

The pet store told me he isn't hand tamed, but he is very young I did my research on how to tell the age.

I'm just not use if he needs a nest to sleep in or are nests only used for breeding, and how do I hand tame him?

Any other tips too would be awesome.

  1. no they dont NEED a net but if they are outside it would be a good idea so when its really cold and windy they wont freeze! :) heres a link on raisingg budgies

  2. haha im glad i caought your question, you see im a budgie EXPERT... and No they do not need a  nestbox thats only for breeding, they sleep on thier feet on a high perch (normally). As for hand taming, itds rather simple, slowly enter his cage with your hand, and press your INDEX finger lightly on his chest and gerntly but firmly say *up* after about 6-9 times he will put at least a foot on you if not his entire body... handtraining dode not happen overnight so be patient... also hand training is KEY to your birds trust. but before you hand train him, let him get used to his new little world... just think he was taken out of his home and away from his pareents (wiytch were probley at the petstore too) and put in this strange new enviroment, think of it as you settling into a new house or appartment...in the week(s) of *settling in* talk to him,  budguies are very smart socialble birds, that like attention and to be treated as one of the FAMILY... dont keep yopur baby budgie up all night to *party* woith you, as it is not healthy they need sleep, about 10-12 hours a day, (witch a majourity is done at night), you may want to have so,me toys for him, they light things that ring, and have vibrent colors. i suggest a rope with a bell at the end (BUT NOT the JINGLE BELL kind, as they get their beaks stuck in it and its NOT a pretty sight to get it out, get an open ended bell... and if you have any further questions, e-mail me at rusted_chain@hotmail.com , Hope i helped :)

  3. a nest isnt needed, he will find a perch he likes to sleep on and he will go to that perch everynight at bedtime... handtaming the bird yourself isnt that hard, and it is very rewarding to have a bonded bird  check out http://parrotcentral.net/how_to_tame_a_s... for good tips on how to handtame a bird...goodluck!

  4. no breeding birds need nests. Birds just sleep on perches. (If you see him standing on one foot and his head is turned around in his feathers this is normal!! He put his second foot into his feathers to rest it)

To tame him give him about 2 weeks to get used to his surroundings.

In the meantime you can talk to him and give him treats. (do not put your hand in unless to cage food/water)

After the 2 weeks is up you can open the cage and tempt the birdie out with treats.

When he comes out pet him/touch him and if he lets you reward him and give him a treat. (do not touch under a birds wings, his butt, or his middle-lower wing area. That is like his private spots. Plus when praising him keep your voice soft and do not yell at him.)

after he lets you pet him you can put him back in and wait for tomorrow to continue.

The next day tempt him out again with treats and your voice. When he comes out practise touching him (birds LOVE head scratches!) if he lets you reward him.

Then you can start finger training! (remember this can take 1day-1month!)

Take your curved pointer finger and rub his lower stomach. (If bites don't pull away! I know it might hurt but this is his way of saying i don't wanna go up (ignore that for now) plus if you pull away he now knows how to get you away and will keep doing this. Birds also bite to measure the distance between your finger and his foot to see if he can step up!)

If he steps up say step up praise him and reward him. Keep doing this until he gets it then put him back in.

As soon as he masters this (this could take a 1day-month) you can start taking him off. Just say step-off and put your finger near the ground (shake your finger lightly if you have to get him off) when he does go off say step-down and praise and reward him.

Just master this then finger training is complete!

Next is bonding + tricks if you want!

P.S birds are right footed or left footed like we are left handed or right handed! to tell, see what foot he puts on your finger first or what foot he uses to get down with first!

  5. no they only need nest boxes if u are planing on breeding them

  6. well... first there are good and bad sides to this

Good side: you'll gonna have to put a nest on the bottom of the cage and make the parakeet get used to the idea until the flight feathers come in.

Bad side: from doing this not only the parakeet is going to get used to it the parakeet will go on the perch and p**p the p**p will go on the nest and the parakeet might get sick from it=( trust me i no i had one.

try doing this and there might be a chance the parakeet is going to rest in the nest. OK now that's is done now the had taming

there are many ways to hand tame a parakeet  here is my way (you don't have to do this if you don't want to it my way)

    1. try to put your pointer finger between the legs of the parakeet (if it tries to bite then keep trying until the parakeet feels comfortable with you) then when the parakeet is on your pointer finger and take it out(warning: it might fly away if it not used to your house) if it stays then try some excerises and try to call your parakeet back(if it doesn't come back then put it back in the cage and make a name for it until its used to it)

but this parakeet is young so you should patient with it.

ok this is one of my techniques i hoped i helped you with your problem =)
