  1. Most adult butterflies drink nectar from flowers through their tongues, which function much like straws.

A minority of butterflies almost never visits flowers, instead gaining sustenance from tree sap, rotting animal matter, and other organic material.

  2. yeah they are big fans of peppermint schnopps.

  3. yes they drink nectar with their noseand anteanaes

  4. They do indeed, mainly nectar or pollen from flowers. Occasionally tree sap and some other sources. They do also require water and drink it from any damp areas they find. As adults, butterflies consume only liquids and these are sucked by means of their proboscis and consumed. The word proboscis comes from Greek, pro 'before' and boskein 'to feed' and is an elongated appendage from the head of an animal. The most common usage is to refer to the tubular feeding and sucking organ (used like a straw) of certain invertebrates like insects, worms (including proboscis worms) and molluscs. A more familiar example is an elephants trunk which is a proboscis and performs the same function. The following link (look closely) shows a butterfly feeding using its proboscis, it is black and can be seen extending from its head into the flower in front. http://www.flickr.com/photos/morrisk/484...  In the next link, the top photo shows this butterfly' proboscis (just below the antennae) coiled and in front you can see water droplets which is typical of how they get their water. http://www.gistimages.co.uk/tree-nymph-b...
