I know that calico cats are most often female. However, I recently heard that a calico cat does not have male kittens. Is this true?

  1. No they can and do have both males and females...almost all of the time...calicos and torties are female.  ( I say almost because you always hear of someone having a male cally :)

  2. no, calico cats could have male kittens, the male kittens just  wouldn't be calico

  3. No, they have both males and females.

Here's an article about Calicos you might find interesting:

  4. No.  It's the father that dertermines gender-not the mother cat.  What you are probably thinking of are male calicos-99.9% or so are sterile and can't reproduce at all.  The few non sterile male calicos that exist usually sire only sterile kittens.

The calico gene causes degradation of one of the X chromosomes.  In females, the other X chromosome takes up the slack so that there are no health issues.  Males are XY so that the degradation of the X usually causes sterility but male calicos are far more common than people think.

There is a chance that male kittens from a female calico may not make it to birth quite as often as their sisters but at the theoretical most, only HALF (not all) of the male kittens from a female calico that are concieved won't make it to birth.  That still leaves an average of 1/3 of the litter that survives birth male and the actual number is usually higher.

  5. No that is not true, they have both males and females. If they didn't have male kittens, then how would they keep going?

  6. a long time ago my mom was telling us she had a male calico..... yes its possible too have a male but very rare......

  7. No the can have both genders

  8. Calico cats can have male kittens they just will not be calico or tortieshell. Those two colors are attached to the gene that determines s*x. They are always female and if a male does occur he is sterile.
