Do calling cards work in Mexico?

I am taking a trip to Mexico in the near future and I was wondering if calling cards work.

  1. There's a brand called Todito card, which can be used through the internet or with a cell phone or land line. Land line is cheapest, of course. I use it to call the US from Central Mexico and a 100 peso ($10 US) card gets be about an hour and a half of calls. Their website is www.toditocard.com


  2. You can buy calling cards in Mexico that work in the public telephones.

    If you use them for calls to the US the cost per minute is 5 pesos (about 50 cents).

    I have used them in the past, but on my last trip I took my cellphone after checking with my provider, Verizon. The calls were charged at $1 a minute, but it came in handy on a few ocassions.

  3. Most of the time they don't from my experience. Never use your credit card if the operator asks you because they will charge you a ridiculous amount. Most pharmacies have a public phone that you can use and pay cash as you go, that is what I recommend.
