  1. It is not mutually exclusive.

    But in general taking stock of the latest HDD camcorders to hit the market I would say yes.

    You need the higher transfer speed of Firewire and the simplicity of the USB in more cases.

    besides if you have one of the older Sony's it's ok - you can get a firewire to USB converter cheap now a days.

    Most camcorders that have Firewire will also have USB ports and be able to use them.

    HOWEVER ... the USB connection on these camcorders is ONLY for capturing the photos and settings from the camcorder or for using the camcorder as a web cam.

  4. Yes, but often for different purposes, and only if the cam has both styles of ports. For example, I use firewire on my Panasonic cams to output video into an editing program. I use USB to output pictures (I never take pictures with the camcorder).

    The technologies will not be interchangeable if your cam has both. Firewire and USB use different ports and different cables; they are not compatible.
