  1. Yes, the little tendrils near each node is "searching" for something to climb up.  You can then attach the fruit via strong netting, like panty hose or cravats.

But I have mine "climbing" over the container and reaching toward the ground.  The fruit then will be secured by an inverted plastic bowl to prevent the fruit from rotting, due to molds or whatnot on the ground.

  2. They can be trained to climb but you will need to support the cantaloupes.

  3. I have grown them many many times on a fence..yes they will climb..I always tore up an old bedsheet into squares about the size of a bandana and made a tied on cradle for them to put under each fruit after it got a couple inches round...

My garden pictures..I grow veggies 12 months out of the year

  4. I have heard of growing on trellis and slipping the the baby fruit into a length of pantyhose that you then tie to the trellis. Of course, make sure you use a long piece because you will need it as the fruit expands.

  5. They need to be on the ground.  When the fruit starts growing, they will be too heavy, so don't put them on a trellis.  Just give them plenty of ground space.  They don't climb like creeping fig, if that's what you meant.

  6. No they do not.
