  1. carp are cousins of goldfish but their needs are quiet different. they are great pets providing  their needs are met.

they can grow up to 30 lb in weight so need a very large pond (fish tank isnt suitable) they also need a depth of about 4 feet if they are outside this gives them warmer water in the winter neer the bottom and cooler water near the bottom in summer.

good filters are important as they are messy fish always stirring the bottom of the pond. but if you can provide this they make wonderful pets and with time will become tame enough to take food from your hand. i have koi and common carp from a natural pond and the common carp was first to become tame. if looked after properly they will live for 70 to 80 years so they are a pet for life.

  2. Carp are not goldfish. Different genera in the same subfamily. They are not the most exciting of pets but they do live a long time.

  3. Carp are goldfish, probably one of the most common type of fish owned for enjoyment. They are interesting to keep but like any animal you must make sure you can meet all their needs all the time. Read up before you buy one. They're not much fun to stroke and useless for taking for walks but are very relaxing to watch.

  4. That will depend on the species of carp and your resources to provide it a good home. Goldfish are carp not the other way around. Goldfish are fairly representative of carps in general though. They are among my favorite fish species and I have succeeded in training them for show. I often pet goldfish and don't know why people insist you can't do so. I used to work for a pet shop and always showed customers how to approach a goldfish and get it to set in your hand. Use a stresscoat on your hands at all times when working with them and you can train them to do a lot of small tricks but you will need to reinforce the training very regularly.

*Only lift goldfish out of the water when you need to transport them and you should never use a net as the fins, tails, and barbels can be injured*

Numerous other species of carp exist and each will have its own particular needs. Many of these species can be researched online and there are a number of fish-enthusiast websites available.
