Do cats have a "deep sleep"

Question

my cat seems to either just be sleeping lightly or in a really deep sleep where he will not respond to anything it seems - even if you pick up his limbs or head, they flop back down as if he was dead.

Bears have a deep, secondary phase of sleep like this, do cats?

My cat does the same exact thing. Sometimes when he sleeps he gets startled and then goes back to sleep but other times not even a brush of a comb on his back wakes him up. I guess it depends on how comfortable and sleepy they are.

well they sleep very fast but its not DEEP light sleepers

I've read most cats just doze, which is why they appear to need so much sleep (16 hours) each day.  But I have had two cats that appeared to descend into "deep" sleep.  If indoors, sitting on a chair with me, in an environment I suppose he felt was totally "safe" this one cat would conk out like you describe.  The other cat had been seriously ill and probably had both some minor brain damage and hearing loss.  She frequently had to be roused from sleep by touch.

Yes, about 9 out of 10 times a cat sleeps, they are not sleeping in a very deep sleep. They are on guard so if any noise occur they'll be ready for it.

But when a cat is in a deep sleep it often twitches, and dreams.

I'm not sure my cat can also be like that i can tell when she is in a deep sleep as she twitches alot or else she does not respond also they sleep two thirds of the day anyway so i would hope they do get some deep sleep in that time

cats usually have frequent sleep but not deep. may be depends on what breed of cat they are

Sometimes you see cats moving like they are dreaming.... Dreaming is one of the deeper stages of sleep, so I assume yes.
