  1. It depends on your carrier but the cell phones will work when  you are in port.

  2. Contact T-mobile.  I have sprint and they downloaded an update into my phone and it worked the whole time in Mexico and at sea.  I never lost a signal.  Granted it was $.99 - $2.99 depending on my location, but it was good to have because we did have an emergency while I was gone.

  3. turn it off until you get back to the US. what's so inportant as to interupt your vacation? think about it

  4. You would have to with in range of a communications tower I would think

  5. I have T-Mobile and I did not have service while I was on the ship or on the islands, except for St. Thomas (most likely because it is a U.S. territory). My cousin has Cingular and she had "Cellular at Sea", so she had service (cost $2.25 a minute though).

Call up customer care and see if there's anything they can do so you can have service while you're on vacation. It'll probably cost quite a bit though.

If you can't end up getting service, just be grateful and enjoy the break from all the phone calls! I know I did. :)
