Do centipedes, milipedes (gazillipedes?) have any special use?

I'm used to the occasional one in the basement but last night there was quite a hairy one one the wall on the landing to the second floor. I'm not really "afraid" of bugs and usually try to escort them out of the house without killing them. But these many legged creatures give me the complete creeps. Can anyone enlighten me as to what purpose they actually serve and should I be as creeped out as I am? I would really really hate for one of them to actually crawl on me!!

Millipedes are harmless. Centipedes bite, and I believe they are poisonous in some way.
