Question:

Do central air units have an interior fan for actually forcing the air out of the ducts?

We have a run of the mill central air unit that we can feel some cool air by the vents, but not being "forced" out. The fan blade in the unit is spinning, but is there another fan that actually propels the cooled air thru the ductwork?

  1. i think all you have is that one fan that propels the cool air out of the unit.no other fan inside the system.

  2. Sounds like a dirty evap coil !

  3. No, the blower in the central furnace unit is what moves the air.  You might have a service guy check to see that the blower is on high speed.  There generally are two (or even three) speed motors on the blowers designed so that the higher speed can be used for AC and the lower speed for heating.

  4. It sounds like either your coil is dirty and needs to be cleaned or you have an extremely dirty filter. If the coil is dirty then it can pulled and cleaned. This would probably help your air flow. It is also possible that you have dampers in the duct and they are not opened all the way. If you get your coil cleaned I would also suggest that the condenser be cleaned as well.

  5. There is a fan in the outdoor unit which expels the hot air transferred there by the refrigerant. There is also an indoor fan which blows through the evaporator, blowing cool air to the interior of your house. If you have dirty filters, or no filters, this can cause the air to slow, or even be nonresistant. If you have clean filters, you need to call for service, because your evaporator is probably plugged with dust and dirt.

  6. Some modern home builders do have an extra auxiliary recirculating blower built in the return.Builders that use Carrier units exclusively do this many times. You would know it if you had such a fan.It runs often.

If your a/c blower is running and you feel little air,try running your blower by itself for 30 minutes and turn your cool off.

Then put it back to cool and auto and see if you can feel it better.
