My grandma had 1 boy, then 8 girls, and then another boy...is there a reason for this?

Does my family give birth to more girls than boys?

  1. A woman is born with two ovaries, and in those ovaries are all the eggs she will ever have in her entire life.  Each egg contains half of the genetic material that is needed to create a new person.  One chromosome in each egg is an X chromosome.  This is half of what determines the s*x of a baby.  An X chromosome is female.

The other half of the genetic information comes from the one sperm that fertilizes the egg.  This one sperm also has a chromosome that plays a role in determining the s*x of the baby.  But the sperm that a man's body produces can have either an X chromosome or a Y chromosome.

With me so far?  The mother always donates an X.  The father can donate either.

If the mother's X is matched with an X from the father, the baby is a girl.

If the father's contribution is a Y chromosome, the baby is a boy.

The father, and ONLY the father, determines the s*x of the baby.  Some men do produce more sperm with Y chromosomes than X, so they will have more sons than daughters.  It a man produces more sperm with X chromosomes, he will have more daughters than sons.

And if you've not seen them under a microscope, these 2 chromosomes got their names because they look like those letters.

  2. The woman has nothing to do with the gender.  It's the mans sperm that determines gender

  3. It's all to do with the man, not the woman.  It seems that some men produce more girls or more boys.  In some families, practially all the babies are boys.  I heard a story of a woman back in the old days before contraceptions who had 6 sons by her first husband and then he died and she remarried and had 7 daughters by the 2nd husband.  Although for most ppl, it's 50/50.

  4. Its nt genetic...

It depends on the chromosome that reaches the egg first n last...its basically up to the guy.what he gives off

    X or Y.

  5. Actually the female has NOTHING to do with the s*x of the baby...It all depends on the chromosomes that the males sperm produces

  6. It all comes down to genetics.  In theory, there is a fifty percent chance of having either gender each time.  However, research has shown that some families tend to have more of one gender than the other.  Chances are, if you look into your grandmother's ancestors you would find more females over males.  Unfortunately this trend is hard to find in families that have fewer children.  Another way to test is to look at the ratio of male to female cousins.  It has been used as a way to predict the true odds of having a specific gender.
