  1. If allowed to, then they can.  They're not very good at it, but can manage a flutter up to a convenient branch.

  2. yes, but only for short distance. Chickens, in the wild are ground animals, like pheasants etc. so they prefer a run, hop type of escape. They usually run or hop to escape, they will fly, but usually if they're desperate, or as a last measure because flying takes a lot of energy for them (theire wingspan is small compared to their body size and weight).

  3. did u throw it... then yes...

    other wise no onl;y short distances, and then its normally like gliding, not flying

  4. Domestic chickens are not capable of long distance flight, although lighter birds are generally capable of flying for short distances, such as over fences or into trees (where they would naturally roost). Chickens will sometimes fly to explore their surroundings, but usually do so only to flee perceived danger. Because of the risk of escape, chickens raised in open-air pens often have one of their wings clipped by the breeder—the tips of the longest feathers on one of the wings are cut, resulting in unbalanced flight which the bird cannot sustain for more than a few meters, and it is thus discouraged from flying at all.

    They evolved from jungle-fowl, which scavenged the undergrowth for food. Over the years the lost their ability to fly, because they did not have to fly. As a result their weight, wing-size, wing shape and wing-strength has meant they can only maintain uncontrolled flight, by flapping like mad. (The record flight for a chicken is 630 feet - not too bad for a flightless bird)

    Most birds of the pheasant family (of which the jungle fowl is a member) only resort to flight as a last desperate measure, and they are designed to rocket upwards.. a 'sprint' in bird terms, to escape to some tree branch above. Breast muscles accomplish this feat, and as you see with chickenbreast, the meat is pale due to relatively sparse blood supply. Compare duck breast, a bird that flies well and over long distances. Commercial chickens are raised to produce as much meat as possible.. they are simply too heavy to lift like this. (re 'Chicken Run ;) '

    >=] GOOD LUCK.
