  1. Chickens lay eggs for most if not all of the year, but like most birds, if you leave them to their own devices then they will only hatch chicks in spring.

  2. some chickens WILL in fact lay eggs all year round , but most wont. and even then chickens will only lay throughout the year with the right care .and feed and correct amount of lighting per day (14 hours)

    but like i said most breeds won't .. . . .

Purebreds rarely do and lay only occasionally or in random bought . . ie the silkie or Japanese bantams.

but other purebreds designed for laying Will continue to lay

ie leghorns  also hybrids such as the Isa brown

Most chickens will just lay in spring and summer and then gradually decrease as the amount of light decreases and cold weather. but in fall bird will tend to stop laying cos of their annual molt.

and the best time for a chicken to hatch is during spring summer and sometimes fall, rarely in winter but not unheard of.

  3. Chickens will lay for most of the year under the right conditions.  They obviously need shelter, safe nesting area, food/water, etc etc.  The not so obvious way to get maximum production from a chicken is to trick them with light.  In order to get our chickens to produce as much as they can all year, we have lights in the chicken house that come on in the evenings and extend the period of light for the chickens to about 12-14 hours.  Doing this make them believe that it is summertime hours.  This equals maximum eggs and year-long laying.

Without the light trick, the chickens will lay until the weather turns cold in mid-autumn.  They will start again when it turns warm in mid-spring.
