Question:

Do children take naps in full-day kindergarten?

My son whom is six years old is entering kindergarten in a couple weeks. He still takes naps daily for about two hours at noon, as well as sometimes in the morning. He is on medications that make him sleepy. I am wondering if when he is tired they will let him have his nap because he will have behavior issues if he gets too tired? Kindergarten in the town where I live is only free full day... there is no half day option here.

  1. My daughter's full kindergarten did not take naps.  They did have a quiet time where they had snacks and put their heads down for a bit.  This doesn't mean they won't in your district though.

But keep in mind, if they don't take naps and he was allowed to he'd be missing valuable class time: time spent on lessons, socialization, etc.  Perhaps you can adjust his bed time to accommodate for his sleepiness - ?

Either way definitely talk to his teachers about this so they are aware, and can deal with him appropriately in the afternoon.

Good luck, I know it is sometimes scarier for us when they start something new!

  2. It depends on the school district.  I have worked in some that have a rest time with cots and some that would never waste instructional time like that.
