Do clamping signs have an amount of area that they cover per sign?

I had my work vechicle towed away after parking on the side of a road on the entrance to a car park. The road had no lines or parking restirctions so I believe that they had no right to take my vehicle and to add insult to injury the damaged my vehicle when taking it away what I now have the difficult job of proving was done by them!

There are many areas all over the world where signs are not needed for parking or not parking and in this situation is would be understood that this was not the place to park your vehicle.
