I am currently fostering a blue fronted amazon and oh my gosh does he scream! It is driving me insane. i was wanting to adopt him, but I cant handle the screaming. A frend of ours wants to get find a home for his cockatiel and I am considering taking him. So, I was wondering if anyone who has cockatiels have issues with them screaming or if they are relatively quiet birds.

  1. i don't have a cockatiel, but my grama does.

my gramma's cockatiel screams ALL THE TIME when im at her house, my gramma puts a TOWEL over the bird's cage and he'll finally shutup.

so put a TOWEL over your bird's cage and he'll stop screaming.

    i hope it works

  2. they're quiet, but just make sure you give them enough attention, water, and food and they'll be quiet

  3. All birds are noisey.  Volume wise, a cockatiel can't be compared to an amazon.  My blue front is by far the loudest of the bunch, but he's nto as noisey as the lovebird or conure.  A cockatiel won't scream that often, and their volume is very tolerable.  A happy tiel that is given toys and attention won't be screaming all day.  Usually they are vocal when you're on the phone, trying to watch your favorite tv show, or in the morning or at dusk. But I'd say hey are relatively quiet as far as birds go in general, and definately a lot quieter then a blue front amazon.

  4. Cockatiels make great pets as they are quiet unless they want food or water. Male cockatiels will start to whistle and chatter as they mature after 3 months. He will continue this in search of mate.

  5. Unfortunately yes, some are relentless.  Females are almost always quiet, but you never know what you're in for with a male.

I just rehomed my cockatiel to a parrot rescue because he would scream from dawn until dusk.  Problem was I gave him SO much attention for his first 2 years that he got used to me being at his beck and call...so fast forward, my schedule isn't what it once was, and I have this bird who won't back down no matter what I did.

Granted, cockatiels aren't anywhere near as loud as an amazon...but when you listen to it for 12 hours a day, 7 days a week.  It's gets old fast.

Luckily for me (and him), I found this wonderful family who is starting a parrot rescue who were thrilled to take my tiel.  He's very sociable and speaks a lot of words so he's a lot of fun to be around...when he's not screaming.  In his new home he's with a lot of other tiels who are available to snuggle with him and don't mind one bit.  He's adjusting well.  I'm having a harder time with the transition than he is, lol... I miss him like crazy (even the screaming, it's WAY too quiet around here without him) and I cry often, but I know that rehoming him was the best thing to do for him because he's getting all the attention he craves right now, and I couldn't give him that.

If you want a quiet bird, I'm hearing more and more about parrotlets.  Which have the same talking abilities as a cockatiel, but lack the ability to scream as loud as one.  I'm not getting one though...my tiel screamed because I couldn't give him enough attention (as far as he was concerned that would be every waking second)...parrotlets don't take take any less time to care for...they're just quieter.

  6. cockatiels do not scream but they can get annoying if you dont give them enough water, food, or attention they do chirp from time to time but you can teach them how to talk and sometimes teach them songs or favorite whistles

  7. Find out if the cockatiel is a boy or a girl. Girls are VERY quiet. I have a female cockatiel & she chirps once when we flush the toilet or sneeze, but other than that, she's pretty quiet. Males will be a little more vocal & will more easily pick up tunes they can whistle. And while females usually don't learn to speak, some male cockatiels pick up actual words. They won't be as clear as words spoken by larger parrots known for their speech skills - but cockatiels in general are on the quiet side when compared to most other species.
