Do colleges care if you have transferred from a 4-year college to a community college?

I'm a sophomore at 4-year college right now and don't like the school. Since it's too late to transfer somewhere else, I going to finish off this coming semester there and then transfer to a community college. Tuition is cheaper. I plan on taking the next semester at a cc. And then when I become a junior, I'm going to another 4-year college to graduate. Will these colleges that I'll be applying to next year wonder why I started out as a student at a 4-year college but then decided to transfer over to a community colleges?

  1. Yes they will wonder.

Stick it out and finish your sophomore year and then transfer to another four year college.

  2. Actually I disagree with the above response. The problem will be transferring credits between the two four-year colleges. The reason for this is that community colleges dedicate their programs to facilitate transfer to certain universities, it should be very simple to find approved and transferable classes. However, courses and degree requirements differ greatly between four-year colleges. The reason for this is that four-year colleges don't design their academic programs to be interchangeable with other four-year colleges.

As for your question, the new school that you apply to will take no additional consideration as to why you left the college you started at. This situation happens all the time. If anything it will give you greater life experience and enhance your application, put that in the free response section.

Even though you will have spent 3 years in college when you transfer to the new school, you shouldn't expect to graduate after your fourth year. You will technically be a junior, almost a senior by units, but you will not have completed any of the upper division requirements at that college. it will take at least 2 years to do all the upper division course work and maybe an additional semester if lower division courses didn't transfer from the first college.

  3. The problem is transferring credits back to the 4-year college.

Even though they may both be State colleges - the 4-year college will not always accept all the credits out of a community college.

And don't take the Community College's word for it - talk to the 4-year college you plan to go to as what credits they'll accept and which ones they won't.
