Question:

Do colleges/university have school bells?

I've noticed recently that most colleges on television or in movies have bells signaling the end of class. I have attended two universities myself and visited three more for guest lectures and never have I heard a bell ring. Is this just something for dramatic effect - or just to let audiences know that the fictional class is over, or are there some schools have these bells?

  1. No, I don't think any colleges have bells since there are classes going on at all different times.

  2. It is just for effect in the movies. Because you notice that classroom scenes are always at the very end of a class. It is a plot device that allows the writer to terminate that scene and move the plot onto the next scene.

  3. There aren't even clocks in the classrooms at my school. I'm effed if I forget my cellphone.

  4. Each school has its own system. Private and public schools may or may not have a bell.

  5. At the university that I attend, less than half of my classes have a clock on the wall. And there are no bells, but there is a large clock tower that rings. I can't here the tower ring when I'm in a building. I have not even seen a clock in the student union building.

  6. they do have belltowers...just like prisons
