i went to nasa site and found about I.C.E. and P/G-Zinner comet but don't know how to access (or maybe understand) how they determine the elements of the comet.

  1. They use spectroscopy. Every compound or element has its own distinct spectrum, so by examining the data, certain elements and simple compounds can be isolated with ease.

  2. Water ice is a major component in most, if not all, comets. Certainly it was detected in Giacobini-Zinner (see source).

  3. They actually landed a satellite on a comet. It is so cold it would be easy to fool as many things at that temperature look like snow.

  4. I believe that in order for an object in space to be properly classified as a comet it must be made up of rock, dust and ice. Don't quote me on that though. All comets contain the same elements, that's why their called comets. If it were a meteor it would most likely be just solid rock.

  5. MOST COMETS, PERHAPS ALL ARE COMPOSED OF ICE AND ROCK AND SPECTROSCOPIC ANALYSIS IS HOW IT'S DETERMINED.
